Workshop Artist
Bernard Kerr
Bernard Kerr is a gifted artist and teacher. He has been working in clay for over 4 decades and uses a wide range of techniques to produce a diverse selection of ceramic works.
A fascination with local flora and the ancient landscapes of Western Australia inspire many of his glazes, ceramic forms and paintings. Inspired by recent travels, some of his latest ceramic works also reference the landscapes of Iceland, Finland, China and Indonesia. In addition, an enduring interest has been investigating the dualistic relationship between art and craft, images and objects and form and function. These works reference the connections and conjunctions between the traditions of painting and ceramics and how they influence ways of thinking about life.
Bernard holds a Master of Visual Arts majoring in Ceramics from Curtin University and has an extensive background lecturing at a tertiary level and as a lead educator in secondary school teaching. He has held three major solo shows and his work is also held in a number of government, private and corporate collections.
He works from his studio in the Marri forest east of Perth and teaches ceramics and holds workshops on a regular basis. He is also an educational consultant for the International Baccalaureate organization and travels regularly to give workshops throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Bernard also enjoys writing about ceramics and is published in a number of books and ceramic journals.
