Warrandyte Pottery Gallery Exhibition

Looking Beyond

Reflections on the lives of two women who have lived, have challenged and been challenged by life. Looking Beyond is an exhibition by Abstract Artist Sharon Robison and Ceramic Artist Josephine Cassar.

Through their chosen modalities each artist reflects on the enduring expectations of wife, mother and career, and begin to reconnect and explore their inner selves.

Sharon Robison

Sharon Robison is a visual artist living and working in Montmorency.

Grounded in Abstract Expression, Sharons intentions in her work are to capture feelings associated with personal experience and meaningful places and bring them to her audience.

Through the use of colour, light and free flowing form, her work in the series for ‘Looking Beyond’ allows her to reconnect to self and embrace the ever changing beauty of nature.

Influenced by Helen Frankenthaler and Joan  Mitchell, acrylic paint is applied to the canvas with brushes, palette knives or pouring directly onto the surface of the canvas.

Josephine Cassar

Josephine Cassar is a studio based ceramic artist living in

Montmorency. She grew up and was educated in the little

Mediterranean island of Malta. She has memories of growing up surrounded by the ruins of neolithic temples and centuries old architecture and art.

Josephine moved to Australia as a young adult and fell in love with the rugged beauty of the Australian bush and the multicultural character of the city of Melbourne. Australia is the country that inspired her to pursue her love of clay.

Josephine is a self-taught ceramicist and a teacher of pottery. She is also an inveterate traveller and during her travels, is forever looking for opportunities to work in different potters’ studios and attend workshops and residences run by expert ceramic artists outside

Australia. While continuing to be inspired by the pottery and art of her home country, these adventures have increased her passion for the diversity of culture and art to be found worldwide.

In her work, Josephine prefers to take a minimalist approach which allows her to focus on the natural textures and tactile beauty of the glazed surface of the clay.
