Extended Practice

A dedicated group with weekly sessions to work alongside fellow artists, share thinking, and learn through proximity to other practices.

Extended Practice — 2026 Program Overview

A multidisciplinary artist community faciliated by studio director, Gabriela (Gabie) Mello

The Extended Practice Collective is an ongoing, small-cohort program designed for artists working across any modality—clay, drawing, painting, textiles, mixed media, sculpture, installation, writing, or hybrid practices. Built over several years of quiet, intentional evolution at Warrandyte Pottery, this program has grown into a collaborative artist community: a place where practitioners work alongside one another, exchange perspectives, and deepen their relationship to their process in a supportive, intellectually engaged environment.

This program is not skills-based. Instead, it centres on creative inquiry, attunement to process, and the development of each artist’s individual voice, held within a collective framework where learning emerges through dialogue, practice, and shared presence.

Weekly Gathering — Tuesdays, 5:30pm–8:30pm

A dedicated weekly session to work alongside fellow artists, share thinking, and learn through proximity to other practices. Sessions are facilitated by studio owner, multidisciplinary artist, and arts-based researcher Gabie Mello, who offers mentorship and guidance where needed without directing or prescribing.

This weekly time is structured yet spacious—an environment that supports deep engagement with your work while remaining connected to a cohort of peers who hold diverse modalities, backgrounds, and creative languages.

Monthly Group Reflection Session

The first Tuesday of the month becomes a facilitated group reflection circle.

  • Participants receive reflection prompts in advance from Gabie via whatsapp.

  • The session focuses on opening thoughtful conversations about each artist’s process, values, challenges, and intentions.

  • This is a space for honest, grounded dialogue that strengthens each artist’s understanding of their own work and the wider context it sits within.

A Shared Artist Community

This program acknowledges that we grow as artists in relationship—to materials, ideas, and to one another. The cohort becomes a supportive ecosystem where each participant’s unique perspective and ability enriches the collective experience. The emphasis is on mutual learning, critical generosity, and building sustainable, long-term studio habits within community.

Testimonials

  • Taking part in Handbuilding Clay Ed this year has been so fun! Gabie is so generous in the way she shares her knowledge, creativity and insights all the while empowering you to find your own unique expression. It has been such a peaceful space alongside a beautiful group, connecting over clay and inspiring and encouraging one another every step of the journey. The studio time compliments the structured classes so well, every week I look forward to spending time at the studio getting lost in different projects and connecting with the vibrant and friendly community. Warrandyte pottery truly is such a special place, I will be forever grateful to Gabie, Drew and the team for what they have created and invited us to be a part of!

  • Extended Practice has been an amazing opportunity for me to deepen my artistic journey. We have become a wonderful creative community. Our work has been very different as are our ages and experience, but we share ideas, critique each other's pieces, and support each other with the utmost respect and awe. It truly is lovely.
